PPL has chosen the Evolutionary Power Reactor of the French multinational company AREVA.
AREVA is a world leader in nuclear energy and has the backing of the government of France, a country with a strong and successful national nuclear energy policy.
The AREVA reactor design has four independent cooling systems, housed in separate buildings for greater protection. The reactor building has an additional shield wall designed to withstand even the most severe natural and man-made forces.

Four reactors of this design are currently under construction – one in Finland, one in France and two in China (The Bell Bend design will benefit from experience gained on these projects). AREVA plans to build a fleet of these reactors in the United States. Such a fleet arrangement will improve efficiency and safety by standardizing designs and allowing companies to share technology and best practices. The AREVA Evolutionary Power Reactor incorporates significant improvements in safety and economics over previous technologies.
